Hurricane Ike's effects force change in National Show DatesAs everyone knows, unfortunately last week's Hurricane Ike swept a wide path
of destruction inward from the Texas coast and upward throughout SE Texas.
Although the devastation Ike caused in the coastal communities was immense and
by far the greatest, many rural areas and small cities throughout SE Texas were profoundly effected and suffered major damage as well. In addition there were widespread failures of power, water and communications systems throughout the area and many areas are still without those services, with some areas predicted to be without those vital services for 3 weeks or longer.

The Nacogdoches Expo Center was reserved for the 74th US National Peruvian Horse Show Sponsored by USPHA set to take place next week on September 27-28, 2008. The Expo center is a FEMA designated evacuee center for animals and had been serving to shelter all types of animals including horses since before Ike made landfall. In addition, when the path of Ike's greatest inland destruction became its own area and its surrounding local area it was also pressed into service for people and as a public food, water, and ice distribution center, and as a staging area for National Guard, police, sheriff, emergency response personnel, and power repair crews.

In view of these unexpected circumstances unfortunately the center was
unable to assess or guarantee that the facility would be back to normal usage
within the short time remaining before our horse show and so it was agreed that
it was necessary to postpone the show as the current emergency usages take
priority. Therefore we are in the process of arranging for a new date for the
show and the new date will be announced as soon as it is decided.
We want to thank all of the many dedicated Peruvian Horse owners, breeders,
and members of the industry who are planning to attend and all of those who
have expressed their great thanks and appreciation for the high performance
standard USPHA is requiring for all horses to compete in the Breeding Division
and the many other innovations included in our competition schedule. We are
looking forward to having a great show.
Thank you very much,
USPHA Show Committee 74th US National Peruvian Horse Show
